A genuine Iron Age gold stater of the Atrebates from Longwick, Buckinghamshire, England, discovered by a metal detectorist and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the honest truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a museum-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: minimal, direct, and focused on the object itself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This uninscribed British Iron Age gold stater dates to c. 100–60 BC.
The PAS record identifies it as a British A “Westerham” type stater, in the Southern Atrebatic style. The obverse carries an abstract design based on the head of Apollo, while the reverse shows an abstract horse facing left — a powerful visual language of late Iron Age coinage in southern Britain.
Found in Longwick, Buckinghamshire, this coin is a small but striking survival of Iron Age Britain: gold, symbol, wealth, power, and identity compressed into one ancient object.
THE DESIGN
This design uses the “Detectorist’s Find” format — simple, minimal, and field-oriented.
The coin is presented large and isolated, with bold typography, a barcode-style graphic, the ARTEFACT mark, and the vertical line:
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
The layout treats the object as a direct field discovery rather than a decorative museum exhibit. It is clean, focused, and built around the detectorist’s relationship with the find.
Printed text on the design:
“DETECTORIST’S FIND”
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
“UNINSCRIBED GOLD STATER OF THE ATREBATES”
“IRON AGE BRITAIN, BETWEEN 100 BC AND 60 BC”
“FOUND IN LONGWICK, BUCKINGHAMSHIRE, ENGLAND”
