A genuine Iron Age copper-alloy brooch, discovered by a metal detectorist in Staffordshire, England, and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the simple truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a catalogue-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: personal, direct, and grounded in the real experience of recovery.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This brooch is an Iron Age La Tène II example, classed as a Hawkes & Hull Type 2B, and dated to between 300 BC and 200 BC.
It was found in Lichfield, Staffordshire, England, by metal detector and later recorded with the PAS.
Its openwork form and distinctive wheel-like structure give it a strong visual character that makes it instantly recognisable. What once belonged to Iron Age Britain later passed through the soil for centuries before returning to light through a modern detectorist’s signal.
THE DESIGN
This design uses the “Detectorist’s Find” format — cleaner, more immediate, and more field-oriented than the more museum-style ARTEFACT collections.
The artefact is presented large and isolated, with bold typography, a minimal supporting layout, the vertical line:
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
The result is a stripped-back detectorist design that gives the object room to speak for itself.
Printed text on the design:
“DETECTORIST’S FIND”
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
“LA TÈNE II HAWKES & HULL BROOCH”
