A genuine Anglo-Saxon gold solidus pendant of Maurice Tiberius from Hoath, Canterbury, Kent, England, discovered by a metal detectorist and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the honest truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a museum-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: minimal, direct, and focused on the object itself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This early medieval gold pendant dates to c. AD 582–602.
The PAS record describes it as a pendant made from a Gallic Provençal quasi-imperial gold solidus issued in the name of Maurice Tiberius. A ribbed suspension loop was soldered to the edge of the coin, turning the imported gold coin into a wearable Anglo-Saxon object.
The pendant also carries an attached filigree border and a single large gold pellet placed above the emperor’s bust. These details connect the object not only to imperial coinage, but to the Anglo-Saxon practice of adapting prestigious imported gold coins into personal ornaments.
Found in Hoath, Kent, this object is a remarkable survival: foreign gold, imperial imagery, early medieval craftsmanship, and detectorist discovery brought together in one recorded find.
THE DESIGN
This design uses the “Detectorist’s Find” format — simple, minimal, and field-oriented.
The pendant is presented large and isolated, with bold typography, a barcode-style graphic, the ARTEFACT mark, and the vertical line:
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
The layout treats the object as a direct field discovery rather than a decorative museum exhibit. It is clean, focused, and built around the detectorist’s relationship with the find.
Printed text on the design:
“DETECTORIST’S FIND”
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
“GOLD SOLIDUS PENDANT OF MAURICE TIBERIUS”
“ANGLO-SAXON ENGLAND, BETWEEN AD 582 AND AD 602”
“FOUND IN HOATH, CANTERBURY, KENT, ENGLAND”
