A genuine Roman copper-alloy bow-and-fantail brooch from Buckland, Hertfordshire, England, discovered by a metal detectorist and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the honest truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a museum-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: minimal, direct, and focused on the object itself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This Roman bow-and-fantail brooch dates to between AD 50 and AD 150.
The PAS record describes it as a complete copper-alloy brooch with a hinged pin, chain loop, decorated head, bow, and fan-shaped foot. The object still preserves strong traces of red enamel, giving the brooch a striking visual identity even after centuries in the ground.
Found in Buckland, Hertfordshire, this artefact is a small but powerful fragment of Roman Britain — an object once worn, lost, buried, and finally recovered by a modern detectorist.
THE DESIGN
