THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This complete Roman Bow-and-Fantail brooch dates to c. AD 50–150. It is made from copper alloy and preserves enamel decoration. The head has rectangular wings, an integral hinge mechanism, and a central attachment loop. The bow includes a circular ring-and-dot panel with surviving red enamel, while the triangular lower bow is decorated with lozenge-shaped cells retaining blue enamel.

Found on cultivated land by metal detector, this brooch is a strong example of Roman personal ornament from northern England — practical, decorative, and built around a distinctive fantail form.
