A genuine Roman gold aureus of Gallienus, discovered by metal detector in Murton, York, England, and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.

THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This gold aureus of Gallienus dates to the period AD 255–258, during the joint reign with Valerian I. It belongs to the VIRTVS AVGG reverse type and was struck at the mint of Rome. The obverse shows the laureate and cuirassed bust of Gallienus facing right, while the reverse depicts Mars walking right, holding a spear and carrying a trophy over his shoulder.

Gold coins of Gallienus are exceptionally rare finds in Britain. The PAS record notes that only one other gold coin of Gallienus from the joint reign with Valerian had previously been recorded from Britain, making this a remarkable detectorist discovery and an especially strong numismatic piece.

THE DESIGN
Built in the “Where Earth Keeps Legends” format, the print combines a period header, catalogue-style information panels, a UK location marker, and the detectorist badge:
“FOUND WITH A METAL DETECTOR”

Printed slogan on the design:
“AN IMPERIAL AUREUS — A TROPHY OF HISTORY — KEPT BY THE EARTH”
