ANGLO-SAXON SILVER PENNY OF ETHELRED II (Light Colours)
A genuine Anglo-Saxon silver penny of Ethelred II, Last Small Cross type, discovered by a metal detectorist on the Isle of Wight, England, and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design turns a real early-medieval coin into a clean museum-meets-streetwear piece for people who value the story more than the trophy.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This coin dates to c. AD 1009–1017, during the reign of Ethelred II. The PAS record identifies it as a complete silver penny of the Last Small Cross type (North 777), struck by the moneyer Godwine at the London mint.
The obverse shows a diademed bust facing left, while the reverse carries a small cross pattée. Small in size but powerful in presence, this is a piece of late Anglo-Saxon England that carries more than a thousand years of history in miniature.
THE DESIGN
Built in the “Where Earth Keeps Legends” format, the print combines a strong period header, catalogue-style information panels, a UK location marker, and the detectorist badge:
“FOUND WITH A METAL DETECTOR”
Printed slogan on the design:
“THE PAST — IN YOUR PALM”
“A SILVER PENNY OF ETHELRED II”
“A THOUSAND YEARS IN MINIATURE”
