A genuine Roman silver denarius of Augustus from Ash-cum-Ridley, Sevenoaks, Kent, England, discovered by a metal detectorist and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the honest truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a museum-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: minimal, direct, and focused on the object itself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This Roman silver denarius dates to the reign of Augustus, between 2 BC and AD 9.
The PAS record identifies it as a Gaius and Lucius type denarius, minted at Lugdunum. The obverse shows the laureate head of Augustus, while the reverse depicts Gaius and Lucius standing front, each resting a hand on a shield, with spears behind them and ritual symbols above.
Found in Kent and recorded as part of Treasure case 2011T778, this coin carries the weight of Roman imperial power in a small silver object — a fragment of empire, lost in Britain and recovered from the ground.
THE DESIGN
This design uses the “Detectorist’s Find” format — simple, minimal, and field-oriented.
The coin is presented large and isolated, with bold typography, a barcode-style graphic, the ARTEFACT mark, and the vertical line:
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
The layout treats the object as a direct field discovery rather than a decorative museum exhibit. It is clean, focused, and built around the detectorist’s relationship with the find.
Printed text on the design:
“DETECTORIST’S FIND”
“EVERY FIND COUNTS”
“SILVER DENARIUS OF AUGUSTUS”
“ROMAN BRITAIN, BETWEEN 2 BC AND AD 9”
“FOUND IN ASH-CUM-RIDLEY, SEVENOAKS, KENT, ENGLAND”
