A genuine Roman gold aureus of Gallienus from Murton, York, England, discovered by a metal detectorist and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design belongs to the “Detectorist’s Find” collection — a series built around the moment of discovery, the culture of the field, and the honest truth that every find counts.
The same artefact may appear in other ARTEFACT collections, but here it is presented not as a museum-style historical plate, but as a detectorist’s find: minimal, direct, and focused on the object itself.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This Roman gold aureus dates to AD 255–258, during the joint reign of Gallienus and Valerian I.
The PAS record identifies the coin as an aureus of Gallienus, minted in Rome. The obverse shows the laureate and cuirassed bust of Gallienus facing right. The reverse carries the legend VIRTVS AVGG and depicts Mars walking right, holding a spear and carrying a trophy over his shoulder.
Gold coins of this period are rare finds in Britain. The PAS record notes this object as a find of note, designated for inclusion in the British Numismatic Journal Coin Register.
Found in Murton, York, this coin is a small but powerful survival of Roman Britain: imperial authority, military symbolism, precious metal, and field discovery brought together in one object.
THE DESIGN
