A genuine early medieval Anglo-Saxon silver penny of Eadred, discovered by a metal detectorist in Southwark, London, England, and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.
This ARTEFACT design turns a real Anglo-Saxon coin into a bold museum-meets-streetwear piece for people who value the story more than the trophy.
THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This silver penny dates to the reign of Eadred, c. AD 946–955. The PAS record identifies it as an early medieval Anglo-Saxon penny, North no. 713, with a diademed and draped bust on the obverse and a small cross pattée on the reverse.
The obverse inscription reads “EADRED REX”, naming the Anglo-Saxon king directly. The reverse names the moneyer Wilfrith through the inscription “WILFRE D MONETA”. A small coin, but a direct survival from 10th-century England.
THE DESIGN
Built in the “A Fragment of Time” format, the print combines a large central artefact image, a technical grid background, catalogue-style data panels, a UK PAS find ID, and the vertical detectorist mark:
“FOUND WITH A METAL DETECTOR”
