A genuine Roman plated denarius of Septimius Severus, discovered by a metal detectorist in Barley, Hertfordshire, England, and recorded by the UK Portable Antiquities Scheme.

This ARTEFACT design turns a real recorded coin into a museum-meets-streetwear piece for people who value the story more than the trophy.

THE STORY BEHIND THE FIND
This Roman denarius dates to AD 202–211 and belongs to the reign of Septimius Severus. It is a plated forgery: a copper-alloy core coated with silver, made as a contemporary copy of a Roman Imperial denarius. The reverse type is ADVENT AVGG, depicting the emperor on horseback facing left, with a soldier in front leading the horse by the bridle and holding a vexillum.

The obverse shows the laureate head of Septimius Severus facing right. Although the coin is a copy rather than an official silver issue, that makes the find especially interesting: it speaks not only about imperial imagery and Roman currency, but also about imitation, circulation, and everyday economic reality in Roman Britain.

Found on cultivated land by metal detector and later recorded with the PAS, this is a real artefact with a story that goes beyond the surface of the coin.
